Charting the Path to Equity

About us

Leading with Values

Our Guiding Principles

The nine Transformative Principles emerged from the “Beyond 2020” Sustainability Planning Process where adult residents, youth residents, and organizational representatives participated to reflect on the Santa Ana Building Healthy Communities 10-year initiative and identified the next steps guided by the principles.

The vision Beyond 2020 is working towards a new way of organizing and working with community. Through a set of guiding transformative principles, the hope is that Santa Ana will be more intentional about organizing experience: improve the quality of relationships, the depth of personal and social transformation, and the dynamics of power even among those who organize; which will be a gradual and long-term process.

English
Spanish
Community-Driven

Having majority participation, leadership, and decision-making of and by individuals directly impacted by the issues being addressed. Respecting and supporting the autonomy and leadership of adults and youth.

Community Well-Being

Rest, self-care and community-care is critical to our work for social change. Transforming the world starts with transforming ourselves and centering our collective healing.

Meeting Immediate Needs

Building in space and resources to address the immediate needs of the community. This includes basic livelihood needs such as food, water, shelter, clothing, urgent mental or physical health needs, and rapid legal response for eviction, deportation, and similar crises.

Systems Change at the Root

Addressing the underlying issues of systemic oppression that affect us based on our different social identities, such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship, etc. We work to change our social systems to create real justice and equity.

Intentional Trainings

The opportunity to plan for our growth and self-improvement by learning from each other and from others whose skills and experience can help us.

Conscious Communication

This means making sure that all members of our community have the skills they need to listen, communicate, build trust and work collaboratively with each other.

Conflict Resolution

Establishing conflict as both inevitable and an opportunity for growth, exploring individual and organizational patterns around communication, conflict norms, and how harm is handled.

Intersectional Structures

This means a framework of interconnected identities, structures and processes to strengthen our social movements as well as unite us in shared understanding, solidarity, purpose, and power.

Art and Culture

The intentional use of art and cultural strategies to create social change, as well as providing space for art, creativity and culture throughout our work.
